Hanceville library hosts annual poetry night and statewide competition

The Shirley Burden Public Library in Hanceville celebrated the written word on Friday, May 29, hosting a special edition of its annual Poetry Night and poetry competition. The event drew writers from across Alabama, featuring more than 40 submitted entries that showcased a wide variety of voices, styles and themes.

Organized to encourage literacy and creative expression in honor of National Poetry Month, the competition judged entries anonymously based on both craftsmanship and creativity. The library promoted the event through local media and universities to reach poets across the state.

If you missed this special competition, there is still plenty of opportunity to hear local talent! Poetry Night is held at the library on the last Friday of each month at 6 p.m. through October. Library officials are already looking forward to bringing the annual competition back next April.
